Ranking is a by-product

Search engines are trying to answer a question. Sites that answer it well get found. Almost everything sold as an SEO trick is an attempt to skip that.

Most requests for SEO arrive as a request for a lever: something to pull that moves a position. The uncomfortable answer is that the lever is the site itself, and the work is mostly ordinary.

That does not mean there is nothing technical to do. It means the technical work is about removing reasons not to rank, rather than adding reasons to.

The floor is technical, the ceiling is not

There is a small set of things that will hold a site back no matter how good the writing is. A page that takes too long to render on a mid-range phone. A title that is the same on forty pages. Content that only exists after a script runs, on a site that gives the crawler no help. Two URLs serving the same content with nothing saying which one is canonical. A sitemap that lists pages that redirect.

None of these earn a position. They just stop the site from being read properly, and they are all fixable without a single word of new copy. That is the floor, and it is worth doing first because it is finite — you can actually finish it.

Above the floor, the thing that decides position is whether the page answers the query better than the others on the list. There is no configuration for that.

Write for the question, not the keyword

A keyword is the compressed form of a question. “Dealer portal” is somebody asking whether they can stop taking orders by phone. A page that repeats the phrase eleven times answers nothing; a page that explains what changes for the sales team answers the question, and it happens to contain the phrase because you cannot explain it without using the words.

This is also why thin pages built to catch a phrase tend to stop working. They were designed for a reader who does not exist.

Two languages, twice the care

For a bilingual site there is one more piece of the floor: each language needs its own URL, its own title, and reciprocal hreflang tags so the two are understood as the same document rather than duplicates competing with each other. Get that wrong and the two versions dilute one another.

None of this is fast. A site that was fixed properly usually looks unchanged for weeks and then begins to move — which is exactly why the tricks sell, and exactly why they keep having to be re-sold.
