Nobody reads your homepage

They scan it, decide in a couple of seconds whether you do the thing they came for, and leave if the answer is anywhere below the fold.

Watch someone land on a company website for the first time. They do not read. They sweep the page, catch three or four fragments, and form a verdict. If the verdict is “not this”, nothing further on the page gets a chance.

This is not laziness. It is what anyone does with a page they did not ask for.

The first line is the whole argument

Most homepages open with a sentence that could belong to any company in the industry. Digital solutions for a connected world. It says nothing, so a scanner catches nothing, so the sweep continues to the next site.

The fix is unglamorous: say what you do, for whom, in words the reader would use. A visitor who builds furniture and needs a dealer ordering system is looking for the words “dealer” and “ordering”. They are not looking for “solutions”.

Specific copy has a second effect people underrate. It repels the wrong visitors, which is a feature. A studio that is honest about the work it does not take spends less time in calls that were never going to become anything.

Hierarchy is a decision, not a layout

Everything cannot be important. When a page gives four things equal weight — same size, same colour, same box — the reader is being asked to do the ranking, and they will not.

So each screen gets one job. On a homepage that usually means: what we do, proof that we have done it, and one way to start a conversation. Anything else earns its place by being on the way to one of those, or it goes to a page of its own.

What “above the fold” means now

It is no longer a fixed height. A visitor on a phone sees roughly a quarter of what a visitor on a desktop sees, and most of them are on a phone.

Which means the phone layout is not the compressed version of the real design. It is the design. If the argument only assembles itself once three columns are side by side, then most people never see the argument.

The test is cheap. Open the site on your own phone, on mobile data, and hold it at arm’s length for two seconds. Whatever you can repeat afterwards is what the page says. Everything else is decoration.
